Seniors Match Report

The Seniors travelled out to Naughton Oval at Parade College to face the severely depleted La Trobe University. The Trobers have had a rough year due to being booted from their ground earlier in the season and it was a testament to their club to be able to get two games up.

The travelling side arrived knowing that nothing less than an absolute shellacking would be acceptable if we wanted to keep our minimal finals chances alive. An 18 goal to 3 first half was a good start but we’d still only improved by 7% and had plenty still to go.

The mid field were well on top all day, led ably by the Morrison-Story brothers and Anthony ‘Bull’ Mattioli until he put a tooth through his lip late in the piece. The second half we kicked up into a higher gear and managed 35 scoring shots with 22 goals in total.

Highlight of the day was Lachy ‘Seal’ Naulty kicking 10 snags and Jake “You’ve Been Good” Cawsey with 8 of his own. The other 22 goals were evenly shared between another 10 goal kickers.

Reserves Match Report

With no guarantee of a game until late in the week it was with relief that were informed the home side had managed to wrangle a side. A big thanks to the scholarly crew who must have gone to huge efforts to put a team together and make sure that 44 young men got a game of football which is what we’re all here for.

A fairly one sided affair ensued as the finals bound Aquinas lads put the Trobers to the sword, immediately punishing all mistakes on the scoreboard.

Undisputed highlighted of the match was big Aaron Kinghorn kicking 12 goals straight. This is the first time Horn has ever kicked 10 or more goals and in his 255th game he just keeps getting better with age.

With 12 goal kickers and just as many contributors up the ground it was a pleasing result. James ‘Christmas’ Reid got the chocolates as BOG supported by Jimmy Morris and Sam O’Loughlin.

U19’s Match Report

The U19’s arrived at Bloods Stadium for their last home game for the season against Preston Bullants with a hint of apprehension in the air. Preston had been demoted from Division 4 mid way through the season having struggled in the higher grade and since coming down had not lost a single match, an interesting scenario and not too dissimilar from the infamous Old Ivanhoe shemozzle back in 2010, but we won’t go into that.

Other than some poor kicking for goal the boys from Great Ryrie Street would have been up by a far greater margin at ¼ time.  2.6 in front of the big sticks meant a slender 11 point lead and more work to do.

Whatever coach Glennie told his charges at the break seemed to work as the midfield started to get on top thanks to some seriously good ruck work from Campbell Grech, feeding the indefatigable Tyson Noyes who proceeded to put it on a platter for Alex ‘Poppy’ Mantel and Jaycob Baxter.

8 goals to 2 through the middle 2 quarters effectively put the game to bed and the last quarter became largely obsolete. Only poor converting in front of goal stopped the margin blowing out further and the final margin of 65 points was probably indicative of the contest.

Highlights were Harry ‘Wiz’ Dwyer with 4 snags, Poppy, Jacob ‘Chompers’ Costello and Noyesy Neighbours with 3 and Campbell Grech in the ruck. Quinny led the backline with aplomb once again.

The Young Bloods are really starting to gel as a team and will hopefully be doing great things come finals.
