Women’s Seniors
Aquinas 6.6.42 defeated Old Carey 2.8.20
This week the Women’s side took on Old Carey. With the senior boys having a bye, it was great to see them come down and support the women in what was an important game for the girls to win and kick start their season.
Amber Saunders for her first season at Aquinas made her way up forward for the first time and kicked two goals off the bat, setting the standard for the game, giving the women a handy lead into the second.
A disappointing second quarter, meant Old Carey were able to get a little sniff at the 4 points, plenty of congestion as the Bloods were getting sucked to the ball and weren’t able to stick to their structures.
After regrouping at half time – goals set by the coaches for the remainder of the game, some seemed unreasonable, however, the girls took on the challenge – dominating possessions in the second half, while also out tackling their opponents.
Maddy James in the red, black and green for the first time, played an important role in the midfield clearing well, giving the Bloods plenty of inside 50 scoring opportunities. Hayley Power found herself an important role in containing Careys best player to no possessions in the second half, while Rach Mackay attacked hard at full back.
Goals after half time to Abbey Starling and Sarah Beattie gave the Bloods a 22 point victory over Old Carey.
The Women’s side find themselves in the top four for their first time since being established last year, no doubt exciting times ahead for the girls as they improve week to week.
Under 19’s
Aquinas 16.18.144 defeated Parkside 6.7.43
The U19s took on Parkside under lights on Friday night keen to atone for our Round 1 defeat. We started well but couldn’t kick a goal early, 5 points on the board before the Skipper The Wiz finally kicked our first goal giving us a 9 point lead at 1/4 time.
Our onballers started to get on top in the middle with Campbell Grech influential and it showed on the scoreboard with a 6 goal to 3 quarter giving us a 5 goal lead at half time. The highlight of the quarter being Filters Reicharts goal of the year contender where he collected the ball on the wing under pressure put on the afterburners, dished off, got it back, kicked it inside 50, followed up, eventually kicking the goal off the ground, what a goal.
The U19s pressure went up a gear in the 3rd and we got the rewards, a 6 goal to 2 quarter capped off by Jezza Kalla’s 45m bomb on the siren, his first for the Bloods causing a wild celebration from his teammates.
The Unders finished it off in the last for a well deserved 12 goal victory.
