Senior Men
Aquinas 12.14.86 defeated Emmaus St Leos 9.6.60
The Seniors came up against old rivals Emmaus St Leo’s in a top of the table clash. With both sides undefeated heading into this game, it was all set up for a cracking matchup.
The Bloods had other plans, opening the first term in emphatic fashion, booting 6 of the first 7 goals. Key forwards Jake Cawsey and Josh Robertson helped themselves to 2 first quarter goals apiece, giving their side a healthy 4 goal buffer at the first break.
The second term saw a much more even affair, with both sides kicking 3 goals. Captain James McMahon and star recruit Ryan Fisher were strong in the centre, both winning the contested ball to service the other midfielders.
Only 1 goal was kicked in the third term as a heavy shower graced the Aquinas turf. Lachlan Barnes and Jarrod Sund were monstrous down back, halting Emmaus’ forward press as well as setting up the play from the half back.
The game was still in reach for the away side, however a third goal to Jake Cawsey put to rest any chance of an Emmaus comeback. Brendan Burke was dominant in the ruck in his return game to senior football, providing his midfield crew a silver platter all day.
2 late goals to the Animals took away from what was a comfortable victory for Bloods, as they came away with a 26-point victory.
This win means the Seniors sit outright on top of the ladder and still remain undefeated.
The boys are looking to continue their winning streak as they take on another old foe in Richmond Central.
Senior Women
Aquinas 0.3.3 defeated by Whitefriars 2.6.18
The Women’s side found themselves back at Bloods Stadium this week facing Whitefriars on a wet early morning. Their first wet game for the season, the women were hoping it would even up the skill set to allow the Bloods to show off the structures they’d be developing at training.
A disappointing start to the game, kept the backline on their toes as Whitefriars had plenty of the ball. Sam Varnam played her best game at half back. Laura Vosti, was given the role of eliminating their best from the game; She kept her touches down and rattled the opposition.
Whitefriars two goals up going into the third, the Bloods knew from the week prior we had the ability to come back into the game. Some significant changes made at half time, 17 of the 20 minutes the Bloods kept the ball in our forward fifty, however could not convert.
Best players Sophie Matthys, Chelsea Tucker, Monique Elliot.
A disappointing finish for the girls, couldn’t take the win. Aquinas held Whitefriars to their lowest score of the season.
After a good week on the track with AFLW Carlton twins, Sarah and Jess Hosking taking training and imparting their knowledge of the game, the women hope to bounce back next week when they take on the Irish girls of Powerhouse at home.
Reserves
Aquinas 10.6.66 defeated Emmaus St Leos 8.8.56
It was a good day to be a farmer on Saturday at Aquinas; less so if you were a skillful half back or wingmen. Thankfully for the Aquinas Reserves, all the players drew on their longstanding rural heritage and pulled off another soild & workmanlike win against the curiously named Emmaus St Leo’s Wattle Park Animals. To be a fly on the wall during the naming of that club.
Anywho, it was another nearly performance for the men, who again strung together 3 quarters only to have 1 very disappointing period. An encouraging first term of 6 majors and a lot of Super Coach pressure points was punctuated by the old ‘head up to the canteen lads, our work here is done’ 2nd term. Admittedly there was a decent breeze at the spiritual bottom oval, but the switch off was quite alarming.
The boys fought back in the third, and the rain really bucketed down for the start of the last quarter. A hefty dose of ticker and desire was required and the Bleeds delivered in spades, running out in the end comfortably despite what the 10 point margin would suggest.
U19s
Aquinas 5.8.38 defeated by Old Scotch 15.11.101
The U19s headed to Camberwell to take on top of the table Old Scotch. Old Scotch jumped out of the blocks, with quick ball movement and targets up forward, they raced out to a 6 goal lead at quarter time.
Our pressure went up another notch in the the remaining 3 quarters, but the damage was done, with the final margin being 63pts.
Best Players Gaz, Dyl Cawsey, Brown, Ben Livo, Glennie and Reichart.
